One of the coolest things at the library is their passes to museums in NYC. You put down a cash deposit of $40 (returned to you once you return the pass) and receive a pass to the American Museum of Natural History (think Night at the Museum), the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, the Museum of the City of New York, the Children's Museum of Manhattan, Guggenheim Museum, or El Museo del Barrio.
You reserve a pass at the main library or on the phone. You can pick up passes as early as 12 noon the day before your trip but must drop them off by 11 am the day after (if you want to avoid a $10 a day fee that is). You must live or work in Kearny and have a valid library card in good standing. Only adults can reserve the pass.
If your family is anything like ours then trips to NYC typically consist of walking around and not buying anything (since everything is so expensive there). This is a great way to see new parts of the city without having to pay extra for it. I highly recommend it!
Donated by Andrew Carnagie there is no better place to take your little ones (or big ones for that matter) than the Kearny Library.
Kearny Library offers a wide variety of books and reading spots. They have a lot of fun activities that bring moms and kids together throughout the week. Mac (9 mos) and I have been to quite a few of the story times on Tuesdays at 11 am (they have them on Thursdays as well). The bilingual story time has also caught our eye so we'll be checking that out in the next little bit. Periodically they have special programs which are always a treat (for both kids and adults). In November of last year they had a gal come in and sing for the kids...it was a lot of fun! In February there was a quite valentine's day party that they did.
They offer a lot of fun things for people of other age groups as well (particularly during the summer). There is a craft circle on Wednesday evenings and a book group at the branch library. Computer classes and resume/application help are also provided.
They have a pretty big movie collection. Since their policy doesn't allow you to put movies on hold you can occasionally get your hands on newer releases than you can at most places. They cost $1 to rent for a day (or a weekend if you rent it on Friday).
One of the best things they have to offer is their passes to museums in NYC. You put down a cash deposit of $40 (returned to you once you return the pass) and receive a pass to the Natural History Museum, Children's museum, Guggenheim, the botanical gardens and other museums too!
Check out their website or go in and ask for a calendar (more informative).
